July 16th is Fresh Spinach Day! It seems like Popeye The Sailor’s love of spinach didn’t only make him physically strong, but it may have also strengthened his vision.
Spinach is known for its high fiber content and vitamins, but did you know that it also has antioxidants beneficial to the health of your eyes?
There are three pigments, known as “macular pigment” at the back of the eye: Meso-Zeaxanthin, Lutein, and Zeaxanthin. Green vegetables such as spinach, kale and broccoli are naturally rich in two of these antioxidants; zeaxanthin and lutein. When these substances become part of a healthy, balanced diet, studies have shown a possible decrease in the development of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
Since it is not always possible to meet one’s complete daily requirements of these antioxidants, our office offers a great natural supplement to our patients called MacuHealth. Not only does MacuHealth contain Lutein and Zeaxanthin, but it also contains Meso-Zeaxanthin, an antioxidant less commonly found in our normal diet.
Be sure to ask about the benefits of these antioxidants and MacuHealth at your next routine eye exam.
