Cataract Awareness Month

June is Cataract Awareness Month. Cataracts account for 48% of blindness worldwide. A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens on the eye behind the iris, causing reduced vision and often glare issues depending on the type and density of the cataract.

Typically, cataracts represent an age-related change but there are other risk factors to consider such as:

-One’s lifetime exposure to untraveled radiation
-Various medical conditions like diabetes
-Medications, particularly steroids and statins
-Previous eye injury and surgery
-Smoking
